Do you want to learn the ins and outs of Market Farming? Now seeking two motivated individuals to fill the position of Farm Apprentice for the 2020 season.
Farm apprentices work with us full-time (40hrs/week) from May 1st to October 31st.
Stipend of $600/month, accommodation and farm fresh food are provided. Lunches are shared by the whole crew.
Apprentices will be trained in all aspects of our business, including:
Seeding, seedling care, propagation scheduling, irrigation principles & operation, weeding, preparing and amending beds, transplanting, harvest techniques, washing & handling produce, market set-up, operating a market stand and more.
In addition to your hands-on education at the farm, you will also have access to our library of gardening and farming books, a popular online farming course, our community of skilled growers, and of course the opportunity to ask us all of your questions.
We live in a 4 bedroom house with three fun, friendly roommates, and our two dogs. As our farm apprentice, you will become a part of our lively household. The kitchen is large and shared by all. You will have access to wireless internet, landline telephone, bathroom with shower, and laundry facilities, all in the house. Household members are expected to clean up after themselves and participate in chores. The farm crew will share groceries, and also shares the duty of preparing meals. Farm Apprentices will have the choice of accommodation between a private room in the house or a converted school bus in the yard.
Our home is at the top of a somewhat steep hill, about a 8 minute walk from the main road, Fulford-Ganges. From there, you can hitch-hike or catch a bus into the small town of Ganges… or to the Lake!
Salt Spring is an interesting place to be, particularly in the summer, when an influx of travellers arrive from all over the world. Colourful, unique personalities abound. There is a lot to do during your time off, from yoga and dance classes, local theatre, book readings, hiking trails, folk music, pop-up restaurants, brewery and cider tours, art galleries, you name it!
The major social event each week of course is our famous Saturday Market, where we catch up with regular customers, make friends, take in festivals like Pride Parade or Canada day.
Our work is laborious, repetitive and primarily spent outdoors regardless of weather. With this in mind, you should consider yourself physically fit and in good health, with a can-do attitude and mental resolve. Expect to find yourself in a variety of postures, using hand tools, spending most of the day on your feet, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
Part of taking care of yourself during the challenging parts of the season is having the appropriate gear. We recommend close-toed footwear, rubber boots, and waterproof rain gear for the wet, muddy weather. A wide brimmed hat, sunblock, clothing with light fabric and long sleeves are necessary for the hot, shadeless days. Do not wear anything that you would be sad to see get dirty or torn, do not sacrifice comfort and ease of movement for style! (However, bonus points will be regarded for style)
